Now Showing: “More Than Herstory”
Prints/Words/Books – Jennifer Anderson & Denese Sanders
This two-person exhibition reflects the convergence of a common story. Both Jennifer Anderson’s and Denese Sanders’ artworks spring from their experiences and reflections on family, motherhood, and personal history. Anderson’s steady use of birds as subject matter is representational and symbolic, offering notions of strength, wisdom, curiosity, and community. Rope as the subject that weaves through Sanders’ current work becomes metaphor for those illusions that bind us, or the security we perceive when being held.
Friends for over 6 years, printmakers for many more than that, their methods and media often overlap and entwine, revealing a connection as artists, women, and the roles they hold in their individual lives. Through out the preparation for this exhibition they have collaborated in the studio, through text and conversation, and have created an exhibition that is a thought-provoking story of home and family, whether defined by will, choice or DNA.

A Woman’s Journey
Printmaking is my key to the secret garden, my journey through the looking glass; it provides never-ending possibilities of exploration. My current work is developing from thoughts and ideas around the experience of raising my family and my goals as a woman. The icons that continue to appear and reappear in my work indicate that I am not yet done, with mothering or with imagery. I work extensively in sketchbooks, working through ideas with icons and imagery that has been appearing in my work for the past decade. I often think I need to move on from this imagery, but it continues to reveal itself to me… indicating that perhaps I am not yet quite done. This is also indicative of raising a family: I am not yet quite done. Creating images from the heart makes my work and process very relevant to me. Words have been an occasional component of my work, and I recently have incorporated phrases from jotted notes and journal entries into my prints, artist books and works on paper.
