IN THE WORDS OF ROSE SELLERY, AN ARTIST FROM SANTA CRUZ:
“Visual narratives make up the fabric of my work, inspired by the human condition. The intricacies and absurdities of our lives, the fragility of family dynamics, gender roles, relationships and complex social issues fuel the conception. I choose techniques and materials essential to each piece to create humorous, thought provoking and occasionally disturbing three-dimensional objects and conceptual garments.
In creating this installation I’ve attempted to tell the story of an imaginary woman, Lucille. I’ve borrowed from the lives of women I’ve known and my own dark past. Bits and pieces of many of us are in this story, and for Lucille at least, she gets to live… happily ever after”.
Using constructed and found objects, furniture, photographs, clothing, natural materials, sound, and video, Rose Sellery will transform the MPC Art Gallery into an environment all her own. Visitors will be intrigued by the story of Lucille, a woman whose complex life has much to teach all of us. We will observe as she evolves through a life of domestic challenges and abuse toward a more hopeful future.
